ESTA basics and eligibility
What is ESTA?
ESTA is the Electronic System for Travel Authorization operated by U.S. Customs and Border Protection. It determines whether a traveler is eligible to travel to the United States under the Visa Waiver Program.
ESTA is not a visa. An approval allows you to travel to a U.S. port of entry and request admission, but it does not guarantee entry.
Who can apply for ESTA?
You may be eligible if all of the following apply:
- You are a citizen or eligible national of a Visa Waiver Program country.
- You have a qualifying electronic passport.
- Your planned stay is 90 days or less.
- You are traveling for permitted tourism, business, or transit purposes.
- You satisfy the remaining Visa Waiver Program eligibility requirements.
Nationality alone does not guarantee eligibility. Travel history, dual nationality, previous immigration decisions, and your answers to the eligibility questions may affect the result.
Do children need their own ESTA?
Yes. Every traveler using the Visa Waiver Program, including infants and children, must have an individual qualifying passport and an individual ESTA authorization.
Do I need ESTA for transit through the United States?
Yes, if you are transiting under the Visa Waiver Program. This generally applies even when the United States is only a connecting point on your journey.
Travelers who are not eligible for ESTA may need a transit or another appropriate U.S. visa.
Do I need ESTA when entering the United States by land?
Yes. Visa Waiver Program travelers entering through a U.S. land border must also have an approved ESTA. CBP recommends applying at least 72 hours before the anticipated arrival.
When do I need a visa instead of ESTA?
You may need an appropriate visa if any of the following apply:
- You are not eligible for the Visa Waiver Program.
- You plan to stay longer than 90 days.
- You intend to work, undertake credit-bearing study, work as foreign media, or live permanently in the United States.
- Your ESTA application is not authorized.
- Your travel purpose is not permitted under the Visa Waiver Program.
Travelers using a valid U.S. visa for its permitted purpose generally do not need ESTA for that journey.
Applying and processing
How can I apply for ESTA?
You can apply directly through the official U.S. government ESTA website without purchasing ClearToApply assistance.

Can ClearToApply submit an ESTA application for me?
CBP permits a third party, such as a relative, travel agent, or assistance provider, to submit an ESTA application for a traveler.
You remain responsible for providing complete and truthful information, reviewing the application, and confirming that the answers are correct. ClearToApply cannot decide or influence the outcome.
What information do I need?
You will normally need:
- A qualifying electronic passport.
- A recent traveler selfie.
- Your email address, home address, and telephone number.
- Emergency-contact information.
- Passport, citizenship, and identity information.
- Travel and U.S. contact information where applicable.
- Answers to the ESTA eligibility questions.
- An accepted payment method.
Employment details, other names, national identification numbers, and additional information may also be requested.
How long does ESTA processing take?
An application status is usually available within 72 hours, but no decision time is guaranteed. Apply as soon as you begin planning your trip and do not rely on receiving an immediate or same-day result.
ClearToApply cannot accelerate CBP processing.
Can I correct a mistake after submission?
Some limited information may be updated after submission. Errors involving passport or important identity information may require a new ESTA application and another official fee.
Review every answer carefully before authorizing submission. Contact ClearToApply support immediately if you identify an error in an application prepared through our service.
When must I submit a new ESTA application?
A new application is generally required if:
- You receive a new passport.
- Your name changes.
- Your country of citizenship changes.
- Your ESTA expires or is revoked.
- An answer to an ESTA eligibility question changes.
An ESTA cannot be transferred to a new passport.
What happens if my application is pending or not authorized?
Authorization Pending is not a refusal. Check the application status again within the period specified by CBP.
If your application is not authorized, ClearToApply cannot change the decision or obtain the reason from CBP. Depending on your circumstances, you may need to apply for an appropriate U.S. visa.
Validity, travel and admission
How long is an ESTA valid?
An approved ESTA is generally valid for two years or until the associated passport expires, whichever happens first. Shorter validity may apply in some circumstances.
Always rely on the expiration date displayed on your approved authorization.
Can I use the same ESTA for multiple trips?
An approved ESTA can generally be used for multiple eligible trips during its validity period.
Each trip is assessed separately, and repeated or lengthy visits do not create a right to admission or residence in the United States.
How long may I stay in the United States?
Travel under the Visa Waiver Program is generally limited to 90 days or less per admission.
The validity period of your ESTA is not the amount of time you may remain in the United States.
Does an approved ESTA guarantee entry?
No. CBP decides the ESTA application, and CBP officers at the port of entry make the final admission decision.
ClearToApply cannot guarantee authorization, boarding, admission, length of stay, or any immigration outcome.

How are the fees shown?
Before payment, your quote separately identifies the official government application fee, the optional ClearToApply assistance fee, and any applicable taxes, discounts, or other authorized charges.
The exact amounts are displayed before you pay and recorded on your receipt.
Are the fees refundable?
Refund eligibility depends on whether assistance work has begun and whether the official government fee has already been remitted.
Official fees already remitted may be non-refundable or governed by the relevant authority's rules. Review the ClearToApply Refund Policy before payment.
Can I apply without ClearToApply?
Yes. You can apply directly through the official U.S. government ESTA website without purchasing our optional assistance.
Is ClearToApply part of the U.S. government?
